I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and joined my father, Dr. David Mackinnon, at Lighthouse Counseling Services in July of 2011. I work with couples, co-parents, families, and individuals helping them improve their lives and relationships. I received my Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northern Illinois University. With a Bachelor of Arts completed prior to that in American Sign Language Interpreting at Columbia College Chicago. I am a clinical fellow with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.
I have a passion for working with adult couples and co-parents, as well as families, and individuals (adolescents and adults). I believe and subscribe to the idea that ‘no man is an island’. We all exist within the context of relationships - with our family members, friends, coworkers, classmates, and even strangers. At times, our relationships challenge us and we find ourselves needing some help to improve them. I aim to help my clients strengthen their relationships through improving their communication skills, being able to more clearly identify their own discomfort or upset feelings, and increasing awareness of and improving their relationship patterns.
My goal is to meet my clients as they are and to validate their experiences with a non-judgmental and affirming approach. Often times clients come in feeling unsupported and unsure of how to address what challenges them. I help my clients identify their therapeutic goals, and assist in their growth with compassion and empathy. My hope is that when my clients are finished with their therapeutic work they are not only better equipped to improve and maintain their relationships but also have a positive and more centered sense of self.
My clinical specialties include:
- increasing effectiveness in parenting
- coping with parenting struggles
- learning effective communication (couples, co-parents, families, individuals)
- developing a healthy co-parenting relationship after divorce
- pre-marital counseling
- improving satisfaction in marital relationships
- healing from infidelity (individuals and couples)
- improving trust in relationships (family, couples, co-parenting)
- coping with anxiety and depression (adolescents and adults)
- increasing coping skills for stress - in relationships, work, personal
I am a single mom, raising my son and work diligently at being a good co-parent. I reside in the Western suburbs of Chicago.
